Southern Utah State

Besides spectacular scenery, southern Utah is home to top-notch golf courses and theatrical venues

Southern Utah is an ideal vacation spot for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Home to national parks, state parks, and recreation areas, southern Utah visitors have many options. They can hike Zion National Park’s plethora of trails, which include a short, 1/4-mile ascent to hanging gardens, a 16-mile journey through a narrow, breathtaking canyon, and everything in between. They can mountain bike on area trails, including the Gooseberry Mesa Trail and the JEM Trail, which offer stunning vistas of surrounding mesas, ridges and buttes. The can also boat, water ski or fish in two of southern Utah’s most popular reservoirs housed in Quail Creek and Sand Hollow state parks.

In addition to its unparalleled outdoor recreation opportunities, southern Utah is a golfer’s paradise. The St. George area boasts 11 scenic courses (6 municipal, 5 private), many enveloped by red rock outcroppings or cliffs, including Coral Canyon, Sky Mountain and Dixie Red Hills. At times, it is difficult to concentrate on your shot at area courses because of their stellar views of the Pine Valley Mountains and the distant monoliths of Zion National Park. Contact the St. George Area Convention and Visitors Bureau to find out what southern Utah lodging providers offer money-saving golf packages.

Southern Utah is home to one of the most exceptional theatrical venues in the state, the Tuacahn Amphitheater. Tuacahn presents a lineup of Broadway musicals every spring and fall in a picturesque outdoor setting among towering red sandstone cliffs. Before each production, Tuacahn offers a pre-show dinner featuring American favorites such as barbecue chicken and Dutch oven potatoes. Visitors can also enjoy the Plaza Show, a nostalgic musical revue, prior to every performance. Other theatrical options in St. George are the St. George Musical Theater and plays produced by the Dixie State College Theater Department. Call the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce to find out what St. George motels offer theater packages that include discounted tickets to one of Tuacahn’s Broadway shows.
